Admiring the Charms of Unity 6. The New Engine Version Presented in the Time Ghost Demo

Unity has released a new technological demo called Time Ghost, showcasing the capabilities of Unity 6 engine. The video lasts over four minutes and was created by a team that previously worked on other well-known Unity demos such as The Blacksmith, Book of the Dead, and The Heretic.

Developers highlighted achievements in visual quality and design complexity, utilizing machine learning. The new developments in Time Ghost have yielded stunning results. The demonstration is based on enhancements made to HDRP (High Definition Render Pipeline), offering new lighting options like APV, Scenario Blending, and Smoke Lighting, while also focusing on performance with GPU Resident Drawer. Developers using Unity 6 can customize graphics using tools like VFX Graph and Shader Graph.

One of the key elements of Unity 6 is the use of machine learning for realistic cloth deformation. Even in dynamic scenes, the fabric fibers are visible, and textures behave realistically during movement. Thanks to Unity Sentis and training the ML model on 2000 frames of vertex animation, deformations are generated in just 0.8 ms per frame, maintaining high visual quality.

Time Ghost introduces a new hair simulation system, initially showcased in the Enemies demo. It has been improved in terms of rendering smoothness, automatic LOD generation, and the addition of volumetric wind effects, allowing hairstyles to behave realistically based on weather conditions. High-density hair can be seen in close-ups, modeled in real-time.

Unity published a detailed description of all the new features of Unity 6 engine in their blog. Users can expect a range of innovations, including a new VFX collision system that provides more stable and powerful collision effects. The release of Unity 6 is scheduled for October 17, 2024.
